How many people are even aware that sitting puts 40% more pressure on the back than standing? Not many I’m sure. Honestly, sitting at a desk trying to beat the deadline, the very last thing going through your mind is consideration for your posture. When stress levels are high and external work pressures are bearing down on you, getting up and stretching the body to relieve pressure on the back seems like a waste of precious time.
But, neglecting to do so can cause greater back problems in the future; this is because the muscles of your back will atrophy if they are not in use, inactive joints will also lose their lubrication and wear out with age more quickly.

The Remedy: Sitting back slightly can relieve the compression of your spinal disks, take a moment while on a call or chatting with a coworker to sit back at a 135 degree angle and decompress the disks. Todd Sinett also recommends using a chair that offers support for the curvature of the spine.

“Your head must be held up strait”, he says, “not jutting forward; when you look at the computer monitor. Get up every 30 minutes or so and get a cup of water stretch your back and grab some papers off the printer. You will feel more energetic when you get back.”
